Description
A dental bridge is a popular term which defines a dental prosthesis fixed onto two or more teeth or implants, thus used in order to restore teeth into a space without teeth and to reinstate the normal local function and aesthetics.
The prosthesis is seated onto two or more natural teeth prepared previously, or onto adjacent implants, placing it over the space in such a way as to supply a mechanical support for the aesthetic and functional pontico or bridge which remains supported in place.
The use of these fixed prostheses will: restore the normal aesthetics, the mastication and phonation of speech and they prevent the appearance of peridontal illness, they prevent the passive movement of adjacent teeth towards the space without teeth and consequently prevent any more dental occlusions and the migration of the corresponding teeth on the opposing dental arches.
All of these situations can result in progressive alterations of the temperomandibular articulation.
Anesthesia
The teeth which are affected are prepared under a local anaesthetic.
Indications
Missing teeth in the areas which affect the aesthetics, mastication and speech phonation. Correction of dental failures not treatable by the use of implants, such as for children, for the elderly, or for sick patients with insufficient bone mass. A cost effective alternative in relation to implants.
Risks, complications and side effects
The initial evaluation of the state of health of the gums is critical in order to determine whether the candidate is suitable to receive a dental prosthesis.

The molar teeth are subjected to a greater mechanical force, they are subject to decay and to periodontal ailments. Therefore, having assessed these parameters, the molar teeth are prepared and the procedures for dental hygiene are explained in detail to the patients.
Normally, the prostheses are well tolerated and have an average lifetime durability of 10 to 15 years.
Post-operative care, convalescence
The cooperation of the patient is of the utmost importance in the success of the functional and aesthetic maintenance of the prosthesis. The hygiene of the area of treatment is explained in great detail, in order to prevent the accumulation of bacterial plaque, inflammation of the gums or decay.
Dental hygiene is effected by the use of dental floss, swabs and specific liquids. After a short phase of initial adaptation, the protheses are as a general rule, very well tolerated.
Recovery time
The adaptation to a dental prothesisis is normally quite rapid, it can be from a few days to a few weeks.
